WHAT UN HABITAT SAYS ABOUT GLOBAL URBAN COMPETITIVENESS
The Global Urban Competitiveness Report (GUCR) is a cooperative research focusing on sustainable urban competitiveness, urban land and urban finance.
The report establishes an indicator system to measure the economic competitiveness and sustainable competitiveness of more than 1,000 cities in the world.
Meanwhile, it selects important issues of global urban development as the themes for in-depth studies, aiming to promote the implementation of the UN 2030 agenda through the assessment of urban competitiveness.
OPINION
It is prepared by an international organization which gives it, in principle, a certain credibility in terms of, at least, the objectivity of its preparation.
But some problems appear; The first is that an important part of the indicators correspond to the country, not the city. Another is that they call an index something that is a single piece of data, thus "Historical and cultural index" is the number of museums, "Fitness and leisure facility index" is the number of golf courses or "Cultural facility index" is the number of libraries. ...judge for yourselves.
This index has a certain tendency to better value some aspects that benefit certain cities. The ranking does not really measure the competitiveness of the cities, which is much better valued by rankings of other private entities.
Its preparation should be given a second thought, although it should not be easy due to the number of cities it includes.
